Under a new UAE federal traffic law, motorists diagnosed with diabetes or epilepsy will be penalized if they fail to inform authorities about their condition, regardless of whether they have developed this condition before or after obtaining the driver’s licence.
The Federal Traffic Council (FTC) stated that the intend is to prevent fatal accidents caused by ill drivers, in the future. The plan is to link the data bases at the Ministry of Health and other health departments in the UAE with the traffic police and licensing departments to ensure that such that people who suffer such chronic diseases are identified.
The authorities have also stated that “Drivers suffering from such diseases must notify authorities about their illness before obtaining the driving licence. In case of an accident, they will not be prosecuted.”
