To celebrate 20 years of the German automaker’s flagship truck, the special-edition Mercedes-Benz Actros 20th anniversary truck was launched at the Endurance City, Dubai, UAE.
The Mercedes-Benz Actros 20th anniversary has a menacing outlook thanks to a spacious L-Cab fully painted in a carbon black metallic colour with a hint of motorsport-inspired detailing in the form of dynamic silver stripes to make it “special”. And bringing literal distinction is the 20 Years Actros emblem placed atop the cabin. It is complemented by chromed air-horns and an LED-illuminated Mercedes-Benz star on the front.
The Mercedes-Benz Actros 20th anniversary is powered by a V6 diesel engine (Euro 3), that churns out 435 horsepower and a mighty 2,100 NM of torque at the crankshaft, which helps it with its towing capabilities. That is 500 Nm more than the Bugatti Chiron hypercar. It is also claimed to deliver good fuel economy too. Power is delivered to two driven rear axles via a twin-plate clutch and a …wait for it…16-speed Mercedes PowerShift automated gearbox. Mercedes PowerShift provides specific driving modes that support the driver in mastering all traffic situations with ease and convenience. In addition the powetrain is helped by a powerful engine & transmission cooling system, air intake on the upper side of the cab and a tandem air cleaner that helps cope with the region’s extreme climate conditions.
With the Actros 20 Anniversary, Mercedes-Benz has attempted to endorse the importance of safety by equipping the truck with several features found on luxury cars and SUVs. For example, the incorporation of Bluetooth connectivity allows for hands free use of a mobile phone whilst driving. The truck’s FleetBoard® telematics system provides not only vehicle tracking, trip recording and professional fleet management, but also continuous analysis and rating of driver and vehicle performance.
The Actros 20 Years Edition also features a performance-optimized hydraulic retarder and an additional braking. Besides the standard electronically controlled Telligent® braking system with Anti-lock braking system (ABS) and Acceleration skid control (ASR), the truck is also equipped with the optional Active Brake Assist, which operates with three radar beams, constantly scanning an area of 1 to 200 meters ahead of the truck. Radar detection of a collision with a moving obstacle would result in the driver been given a visual and audile alert by the system. Depending on the severity of the situation, the system will react with partial braking and, if necessary, even initiate an emergency braking to standstill. The Actros 20 Years Edition features further safety systems, such as a Driver Airbag, a Telligent® Proximity Control automatically adjusts the speed of the truck according to the traffic situation. Additionally, if a sudden obstacle appears, such as a vehicle changing lanes, the driver is warned both visually and audibly. The Telligent® Lane Assistant features a digital camera behind the screen, detecting the vehicle position in relation to the left-hand and right-hand lane markings. When activated, the system alerts the driver if the trucks strays by giving audible warning signals. The additional front mirror increases the visible area in front of the truck, helping to recognize pedestrians or obstacles quickly.
At the launch event at Endurance City, there was a live demonstration of the Mercedes-Benz Actros 3844 S 6×4 tractor-head model and of its state-of-the-art equipment and safety systems. If it weren’t for the licence requirements, we would have had a go in it as well.
