Sharjah plans to have solar-powered air-conditioned bus shelters in the near future. This project has been taken up by the Sharjah Urban Planning Council (SUPC), in collaboration with SRTA and Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA).
The first phase will see the development of 28 bus shelters out of the 172 designated bus stops in the city.
The project was given a green light after a 6-month-long study by Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA), which included identification of the most crowded areas frequented by public transport users and covers approximately 176,000 passengers.
These bus stop shelters will be equipped solar energy panels for electricity production in compliance with the sustainability standards that will power the air-conditioning systems as well as other amenities such as an electronic bulletin board that will display relevant information related to bus service timetables and routes.
