Apparently, Porsche is developing an all-new turbocharged flat-four boxer engine to replace the flat-six engines and that comes as no surprise considering almost every manufacturer is dropping the number of cylinders for the sake of turbocharging, which add a load of torque and improves fuel efficiency at the loss of throttle response.
Rumour has it that this new engine is derived out of the current 3.8-liter six employed on the Carrera S. It is estimated that with technologies like direct-injection and VarioCam Plus, the new all-aluminum turbocharged 2.5-litre flat-four will put out more than 350 horses and 360 lb-ft of torque and the car should redline a half way between 7,000 and 8,000 rpm. It will be mated to a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.
If this is the case then the Cayman S and Boxster S models that will share this powertrain will do the 0 to 100 km/h run in under 5 seconds (estimated) and will top 290 km/h (again estimated) in full throttle.
