Word has it that the next-generation Porsche 911 is parting ways with naturally aspirated engines.
As per reports from Road & Track citing “sources familiar with the project”, the next 911, code-named 992, will have a turbo-only engine lineup. Apparently, turbocharged flat-sixes will be at the core of the 992’s engine range, alongside a plug-in-hybrid model. A four-cylinder 911 remains unlikely.
To soften the blow for Porsche 911 purists, the current car’s seven-speed manual transmission will continue to be sold, alongside the company’s excellent PDK automatic transmission.
The turbocharged base-car lineup is to be introduced, most likely at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
