Everybody knows of Tesla’s Model S P85D’s “Insane” mode, which helps the car go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds; putting it in the company of the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, the Lamborghini Huracan and Mclaren 12C.
And if that wasn’t quick enough? The new Model S is getting a “Ludicrous” mode which help achieve a 2.8 second dash to 60 mph. This is just about as quick as a Porsche 911 Turbo S, Porsche 918 Spyder and the mighty Bugatti Veyron.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk says that acceleration pins you to the seat at a 1.1 Gs. “It’s faster than falling,” he adds. “It’s like having your own private roller coaster.”
However, unlike most Tesla Model S enhancements, this is not a free software update . Tesla had to utilize new physical hardware, specifically, a fuse that didn’t melt when you pulled ridiculously high amps over it. The fuse upgrade will be a $10k option for new buyers, and cost $5k (before installation) for existing P85D owners – which is peanuts for the rich performance-loving tech geek. For everybody else, its just news.
There was also some murmur on Tesla’s electric SUV — the Model X — and their more affordable compact option, the Model 3. The first Model X’s will ship “in two months,” says Elon and he promises that the Model 3s will roll out “in just over two years.”
This reminds me of the brilliantly funny spoof of Star Wars called Space Balls where Dark Helmet demands ludicrous speed.
