On 4 November, the first ever automated drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi in a Mercedes-Benz E-Class was successfully completed, when an E 300 self-piloted itself from Dubai to Abu Dhabi on the E11 highway a.k.a. Shk. Zayed Road on Friday.
This initiative was a collaboration between German-luxury manufacturer Mercedes-Benz, The Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) and the Road Transport Authority (RTA).
Following all safety rules and regulations, the automated test drive was made possible by applying modifications to the assistance systems called DRIVE PILOT – a technology that combines intelligent cruise control, advanced lane departure and bling spot assist and several other features that include automatic emergency braking etc.
In order to keep the safety quotient high, the entire process was overseen by expert engineers from Germany who applied specific software modifications to the existing Drive Pilot control unit to make the E-Class drive highly automated.
The highlights from the entire automated drive, which you can view below, will also be featured at the International Conference of Future Mobility taking place on 14th and 15th November.
