Leave your car buying duties to women says research, they can flirt their way to discounts of upto 20 percent.
In an experiment, 100 men and women were told to imagine they were selling a car worth 750 British pounds and were given written details of a female buyer.
Half of the lot described a woman who flirted through the negotiation. Flirtatious gestures included looking the seller up and down, leaning forward and touching the seller’s arm, flattering the seller and, finally, winking when asking for his or her best price. The other half described a business-like transaction. The results showed that only male sellers offered discounted rates to flirtatious buyers.
However, when women were sellers, rather than buyers, they got a worse deal if they flirted. The research team said this probably because female sellers got the balance wrong.
Laura Kray, of the University of California, Berkeley, said that women who were too friendly could be seen as pushovers. She said “We found that flirtation, on the other hand, conveys assertiveness and power”.
