The all-new limited-edition Ferrari J50 was revealed at the National Art Center in Tokyo to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Ferrari in Japan.
The Ferrari J50, created by Ferrari’s Special Projects department and designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre team in Maranello, is a two-seater, mid-rear-engined roadster with a targa body style reminiscent of Ferraris from the 1970s and 1980s. Each of the 10 examples will be tailored to the customer’s requirements, in the spirit of Ferrari’s fuori serie tradition.
The J50’S powertrain is based on the 690 CV version of the 488 Spider 3.9L V8, which won the overall International Engine of the Year Award this year.
The futuristic design language of the bodywork comprises of the low-slung outlook, with a “helmet visor” effect reminiscent of open competition barchettas from the 1950s, and a black dividing line seen on iconic models of the past such as the GTO, F40 and F50. The lower central bonnet section with raised wheel arch crests emphasizes muscularity typical of Ferrari mid-engined sports cars and the two carbon-fibre air channels in the front bonnet create a sharper looking frontal view, underlined by the full LED headlights. The radiators have been positioned closer together and the front bumper is an all-new design. The windscreen header rail has been lowered allowing more airflow over the aero foil and thus over the rear spoiler.
The tail section is dominated by graphic design themes and 3D elements. The engine is framed by a transparent polycarbonate cover which is shaped to provide a visual extension of the two separate roll hoops that protect the occupants. A transverse aero foil projects as a bridge between the hoops which is a throwback at some Ferrari sports prototypes of the 1960s. The rear also gets quad taillight design widening the car visually under a high-downforce wing. While, the rear diffuser features an extractor shape inspired by jet engine afterburners and the 20-inch forged rim design are exclusive to this limited-edition model.
Inside the cabin, trims that echo the design of the rear bonnet contour adorn the sports seats. The carbon-fibre hard targa top is divided into two pieces which can be stowed behind the seats, conveniently.
The Ferrari J50 presented at the launch in Tokyo is finished in a special shade of 3-layer red with a red-over-black interior with premium leather and Alcantara.
