CCTV cameras have been installed in Dubai taxi cabs by the Roads and Transport Authority, to monitor the performance of drivers and for reasons of security.
It seems the project has been in trial for the past 6 months, with select taxis getting testing gear consisting of three small cameras – and one internal camera facing the driver and two external one, covering the front and backside of the vehicle. Apparently, footage from the cameras is sent directly to the RTA’s control centre.
This measure is intended to make passengers feel safe and also help taxi drivers resolve disputes. Also, feedback is being taken from both drivers and passengers.
My question is, if footage is sent directly to the RTA’s control centre, how is it CCTV? I’m sure they know CCTV stands for Closed Circuit Television! 😉
Also, I’m not sure how ‘Big Brother’ would work out at our office spaces!
