The Boston Police Department has a new addition to their patrolling team and it ain’t a Lamborghini, Porsche, a tank, a drone or an RC car. It is an $89,000 ice-cream truck!
This ready-for-duty Ford Transit van also wears the blue and white livery of the Boston Police decorated with a string of balloons. It will be used as part of ‘Operation Hoodsie Cup,’ a community policing initiative that has distributed roughly 120,000 free ice-cream cups since 2010.
The Commissioner Evans stated, “If you had told me 30 years ago that the Boston Police Department would have an ice cream truck as part of its patrol force and my officers would be handing out Hoodsie Cups … I would’ve said you were crazy. But, I absolutely love the new truck and everything this program represents. The goodwill it generates between my officers and our city’s young people is undeniable and nothing short of remarkable and my only regret is that I wish we had started doing this 30 years ago.”
One police officer siad, “It’s about way more than ice cream. It’s about relationships and keeping kids safe. We want kids to like and look up to us. Operation Hoodsie Cup gives us the platform to share that message and make that connection.”
The truck was purchased by the Boston Police Foundation, but it is local dairy company HP Hood has donated all of the ice cream for distribution.
Stock Ford Transit vans are powered by either a 275 bhp 3.7-litre V6 or a 310 bhp 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine. But the police, being the police, will probably have an upgraded powertrain. In anycase, it won’t be just torque, it will be churning out a lot of ice cream too! Kudos BPD!
