Swedish luxury car auto-manufacturer, Volvo Cars has revealed the V90 Cross Country. The new all-road, all-weather variant, completes the 90 Series portfolio.
The V90 Cross Country combines the traditional attributes of Scandinavian styling, safety and cargo capacity of V90 estate with all-wheel drive and and increased ride height to make a versatile all-weather and all-terrain vehicle.
Volvo Cars’ Scalable Product Architecture providing the underpinnings, the V90 Cross Country has undergone rigorous testing in secret testing facilities in the frozen north of Sweden, where temperatures hit -40 degrees centigrade – Sweden has some of the harshest winters on the planet and over 77 per cent of the country covered in forest and lakes – to the searing desert heat of Arizona.
Styling wise, the V90 retains the Thor’s hammer-inspired headlamps and vertical rear lighting, along with a stretched bodywork that is 4939 mm long and 1879 wide; 2052 mm from mirror to mirror. It stands some 1543 mm tall. The V90 Cross Country’s rugged character belies a sumptuous interior that delivers a level of luxury rare in the segment, combining all the benefits of the connectivity and entertainment features that were launched with the new S90 and V90, including a high-end Bowers & Wilkins sound system.
Engine choices globally comprise of two diesel and two petrol/gasoline powertains. The D4 makes with its twin-turbo 2.0-litre 4 cylinder diesel engine makes 188 bhp at 4,250 rpm and 400 Nm of torque between 1,750 – 2,500 rpm. The D5 uses the same engine with an uprated output. It puts out 232 bhp at 4,000 rpm and 480 Nm at 1,750 – 2,250 rpm. The T5 and T6, both use turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder gasoline engine. The T5 makes 251 bhp at 5,500 rpm and 350 Nm between 1,500 – 4,800 rpm, while the more powerful T6 makes 316 bhp at 5,700 rpm and 400 Nm of max. torque between 2,200 – 5,400 rpm. All motors are linked to a 8-speed automatic that transfers power to all four wheels.
We certainly liked what Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Cars had to say regarding the V90 Cross Country, “Designing a Volvo Cross Country is not a styling exercise, a plastic job. It is based on honest capability.” It certainly gives us some faith in their products.
Production of the car is to commence this autumn at Volvo Cars Torslanda Plant in Sweden.
