Some 6,000 dirty and abandoned cars have been confiscated during the first half of 2016 according to the Sharjah Municipality. A majority of these vehicles which were found either parked in unauthorized areas or covered by fabric in public streets, belong to UAE residents who have left the country on their summer holidays.
The Sharjah Municipality have upped the inspection of abandoned and dusty cars i.e. cars that give a distorted image of the city, this summer in order to improve community aesthetics and living.
Ali Hassan Ali, Head of the Car Impounding Section at Sharjah Municipality stated that “At first, we put a warning sticker on cars that are marked for impoundment. Then the vehicle will be removed within 24 hours if it is parked on the main road; in 48 hours if parked in commercial and industrial areas; and 72 hours if parked in residential areas. The residents who travelled to their home country don’t response to the warning so their car get confiscated.”
He urged residents who plan to leave on vacation to have their cars in private parking lots or with a relative.
Municipality’s inspectors have also confiscated cars that don’t have licence plates. These cars are immediately sent to the impound; some of them have even been linked to criminal and illegal activities.
Last year, in 2015, the Sharjah Municipality issued about 30,000 warning notices, and impounded 10,000 cars approximately and in the year before, in 2014, only 6,500 cars were impounded.
Motorists whose vehicles have been impounded have been advised to visit the municipalities customer service centre in industrial area number 5 with documents – national ID, car registration card and violation ticket – and pay the fine in order to retrieve their vehicles. The municipality official also mentioned, “They can request the services of impounded cars recently launched by the municipality to get theirs cars delivered to any desired location or doorsteps by paying a minimal fees,”.
